![]() Which happens sure, but even when it does work, the background transparency is so minimal and the font so thick that it's still somewhat difficult to read. ![]() The issue is the game is unable to provide an accessible and consistent environment through these mediums.įirst and foremost one of the most common issues I've found online with this game is the text overlay doesn't always work. This usually is a great form of storytelling because you give the player a lot of autonomy regarding how much information they want to ingest (through the readings they find) while also adding in the relevant major plot points (through location or event-triggered voice-overs). The game's main form of storytelling is through two mediums: voice-over diary readings and reading documents, letters, postcards, etc. I should also mention that I make heavy comparisons to Firewatch with this review and I'm sure that is giving an unfair skew against Gone Home. I'll try my best to keep my rambling to a minimum and stay organized but please let me know if I failed in that. The soundtrack was great and overall I thought the game did well in a lot of areas except where it needed to do well. So I was very excited to jump in and try a game with a great soundtrack. ![]() I'm really into the Firewatch soundtrack and ended up learning that Chris Remo did the soundtrack for both Firewatch and Gone Home-a game I've owned but never played for about 5 years. It also got us in the mood to start playing through other games together. It's one of my favorite games and it was really great to watch her experience it. I convinced my fiancé to play through Firewatch (2016) and she loved it. On top of that the game's core form of storytelling is made frustrating and difficult by a lack of accessibility due to glitches and poor text overlay as well as a disconnect TLDR: The lack of emphasis on the game's red herring pulls away both from the main story and the ambiance the game attempts to build. Gone Home is unable to succeed in the areas it needs to.
